How to Join:

We encourage our members to attend our monthly meetings held on the last Monday of every month at 7 PM. Meetings are hosted @ Bagpipes Pub & Eatery, located on the corner of highway 183 and Burnet Rd. The complete address is 9070 Research Blvd. Suite 101

Membership dues are a minimum of $20 annually: you can pay your dues by clicking HERE.

Members can both vote and run for steering committee annually. Most importantly, members can propose and lobby the steering committee for their projects. If approved, they will gain access to the financial and human resources of the group as a whole.

While membership costs only $20 per year, we welcome larger contributions. Please note, however, that more money doesn’t buy more “power” in this group. Your commitment, in the form of your invaluable time, is what we’d really like to have! Your time and your effort is much more valuable than money!

Why Join?

In just over a year Texans for Accountable Government has had tremendous success at both the local and state level.

- Success in the 81st Texas Legislature!

We worked tirelessly during the 81st Texas Legislature and the following special session and our efforts paid off! Texans for Accountable Government succeeded in defeating a number of bills which threatened many of our civil liberties.

With powerful testimony and long days at the State Capitol we were able to put a stop to SB 298, which would have “legalized” the use of DWI check points in the state of Texas for the first time since they were outlawed in 1994. After SB 298 passed in the Senate we knew we had to mobilize and defeat it in the House and defeat it we did!

Not long afterwards, we became aware of SB 1440, dubbed the Anti-Parental Rights Bill. This bill had originally been filed as SB 1064 by Senator Kirk Watson but it failed to pass. So the language in SB 1064 was then added as an amendment by Representative Patrick Rose to Watson’s bill SB 1440. SB 1440 passed in both the House and the Senate and it was awaiting a signature from Governor Perry. We rallied a coalition of freedom fighters to put the pressure on Governor Perry and successfully got the bill Vetoed!

With the calling of a special session we were again threatened with more infringements to our liberty; this time in the form of Public/Private Toll Roads. We struck the TTC hydra through its heart by getting Comprehensive Development Agreements or CDAs to sunset when HB 3 died in committee.

- Stopped “Vampire Cops”

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo had been planning to use Federal Grant money to train his DWI task force to draw blood from motorists suspected of driving while intoxicated.

On March 30th 2009 Texans for Accountable Government sponsored a public forum at Austin City Hall on Police Administered Blood Draws with a panel which included; Police Chief Art Acevedo, City Council Member Mike Martinez, The ACLU’s Debbie Russell, MADD representative Karen Housewright, and Texans for Accountable Government Executive Director John Bush. Hundreds of people packed the council chambers, leaving standing room only, and voiced overwhelming opposition to that invasion practice.

Following our public forum we drew up a resolution and met with several City Council members. Councilmen Spelman shared our concern with police officers drawing blood and sponsored our resolution. Our resolution was endorsed by every major political organization in Travis County including the ACLU Central Texas, Travis County Republican Party, Travis County Democratic Party, Responsibility in DUI laws (RIDL), and the National Motorist Association! When it was finally time for our resolution to be voted on it passed unanimously!
