Road issues – double-tax Toll Roads, and the TTC they were (are) supposed to finance – probably have a bigger fiscal impact on texans than any other. Many TAG folks were active in the corridor fight for years; we are proud to follow the lead of orgs like TURF, premier coalition builders who have led the charge on holding back the toll lobby in TX.

TAG was very active in the last special session of the TX legislature, working with TURF and others to turn out the lights on the TTC (for now). With the departure of the legendary Sal Costello from Austin, and the apparent quiescence of the Austin Toll Party, we here in TAG are intent on filling the gap at the local level, as well as continuing to push back at the State House.

Toll Roads and the TTC – which not only were the key item in the last lege session, but are at the center of the 2010 gubernatorial race – are not going away. Toll roads have been pushed by super-banksters, eg Goldman Sachs for years through “public private partnerships”, aka “corporate fascism”. But those same profiteers have something much worse in store. Meet the mile tax.

This has been discussed by the policy wonks for some time. It’s now (Jan 2010) starting to get the PR push. This is a familiar pattern – first the policy gets floated in the land of policy wonkery. The decision having already been made by the investment banks long before, it duly proceeds through it’s paces of “public discussion” until being finally pushed through at the legislative level. What’s truly insane about the mile tax is the privacy implications that don’t need any elucidation.
